Cemex USA to increase alternative fuel substitution at Brooksville cement plant to 30%
28 February 2022US: Cemex USA plans to increase its rate of alternative fuel (AF) substitution at its 2.2Mt/yr Brooksville, Florida, cement plant to 30%. It will also increase its AF use at its 1Mt/yr Demopolis, Alabama, cement plant. At both plants, the new fuel mix will include biomass. The producer says that it will complete the plants’ transitions before 2023.
Cemex buys Broquers Ambiental in Mexico
27 January 2022Mexico: Cemex has acquired waste management company Broquers Ambiental. The company manages the separation, recovery and treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in the city of Queretaro. MSW from the company will be used as an alternative fuel at Cemex’s local cement plants. This acquisition is part of its Future in Action program, aimed to achieve carbon neutrality.
“With this acquisition, at Cemex, we are firmly committed to the circular economy by integrating our value chain to the production of climate-friendly fuels that we use in cement production. Our objective for this year is to double Broquer´s capacity and thereby contribute to the progress towards sustainability in the city of Queretaro, as well as the transformation of Mexico towards a green economy,” said Ricardo Naya, President of Cemex Mexico.
Broquers expects to increase the current staff by 50 new employees in 2022 to expand its processing capacity. The waste management company was reportedly the first plant of its kind in Mexico to use waste separation equipment in line with European standards for waste treatment.
Spain: Hanson Spain has agreed to sell some of its assets including its Madrid waste management plant to Cemex España. The buyer said that the investments promise a high return and are part of the strategic global strengthening of its vertically integrated positions near high-growth urban centres. It expects the deal to close in early 2022.
Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia regional president Sergio Menéndez said “This acquisition will allow us to better serve our clients by integrating and complementing our portfolio to provide a comprehensive and sustainable offering in Cemex’s high-growth regions of Madrid and the Balearic Islands.” He added “This is another example of the efforts we make to optimise our portfolio and drive earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) growth through high-yield complementary investments."
UK: Cemex has announced a Euro21m investment in an upgrade to its Rugby cement plant. The planned upgrade incorporates green hydrogen into the plant’s cement production process. The company says that the upgrade will enable it to shift to 100% alternative fuel (AF) substitution from fossil fuel use. It said the move is a step towards carbon neutrality in line with its Future in Action programme. The upgrade is expected to be fully operational in June 2021.
Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia regional president Sergio Menendez said, “We believe that this very significant investment in this upgraded facility supports Cemex’s position to minimise the use of fossil fuels for both environmental and economic reasons. It will enable the Rugby plant to consistently operate with up to 100% AF, which will contribute to our climate action targets.”
Andalusian cement sector renews RDF commitments
23 September 2019Spain: Members of the Andalusian Cement Producers’ Association (AFCA) have renewed their commitment to sustainable development with the signing of the VI Agreement for Energy Recovery. All six cement producers, including LafargeHolcim, HeidelbergCement and Cemex, which operate in Andalusia submitted to the agreement, which entails a commitment to using refuse-derived fuels (RDF) at a higher rate than the minimum established by Spanish law.
Caribbean Cement to invest in co-processing tyres
22 July 2019Jamaica: Caribbean Cement plans to invest in co-processing tyres as part of a US$9m spend on capital projects in 2019. More details on the project will be disclosed later in July 2019 when a memorandum of understanding is signed with the government, according to the Gleaner newspaper. The subsidiary of Mexico’s Cemex has already spent US$0.5m on handling tyres.
Fairport Engineering working on alternative fuels storage and feed system for Cemex’s Rugby cement plant
12 July 2019UK: Fairport Engineering is working on an alternative fuels storage and feed system for Cemex’s Rugby cement plant. This project underwent feasibility studies in 2018 and 2019. It is now seeking planning permission and final capital sanction. Once obtained the project execution is likely to take place during a future scheduled kiln shutdown period.
Fairport Engineering has worked on various projects at the Rugby plant since 1998. At this time it supported the installation of a new Polysius kiln with the supply of an associated combined raw materials store. Later it worked on the design and management of a new filter installation in 2006 to support tighter emissions regulations associated with alternative fuels such as a tyre chip and refuse-derived fuel (RDF).
Cemex to convert Gádor cement plant site for waste recycling
11 January 2019Spain: Cemex has signed a Euro117m deal with the local government to convert the land used by the Gádor cement plant in Almeria for use by new projects. These will include projects in solar and wind power generation, waste fuel production from plastics and biomass and a new concrete batching plant, according to Teleprensa. The initiative is intended to create around 400 jobs.
The cement producer has also signed a similar agreement for its Lloseta in Baleares. The company announced in mid-October 2018 that it was planning to close the two plants due to reduced demand for cement and mounting European CO2 emissions regulations.
Cemex Dominicana welcomes change to waste management law
02 October 2018Dominican Republic: Alejandro Ramirez, the president of Cemex Dominicana, has welcomed the approval of a new waste management law, including support for the co-processing of alternative fuels. Earlier in 2018 a bill on solid waste management was introduced to the government that promoted co-processing solid waste and implementing a selective tax on products that create it.
Cemex participates in European Union industrial efficiency research
15 September 2017UK/Europe: Cemex’s South Ferriby cement plant is participating in the European Union (EU) supported enhanced energy and resource efficiency and performance in process industry operations via onsite and cross-sectorial symbiosis (EPOS) project. Designed to enable cross-sector industrial working, the project highlights case studies exemplifying ways for companies to use wastes from other industries to deliver greater efficiency, save raw materials, and contribute to more sustainable processes.
The South Ferriby plant has worked with other companies, including the INEOS chemical company, to determine how waste from INEOS’s production could be used as part of the cement manufacturing process. In addition Cemex Poland and Cemex Research Group in Switzerland will also represent Cemex in the project.
“It is a privilege for Cemex’s cement plant in South Ferriby to participate in this project, collaborating with other companies and partners across Europe. This helps to ensure that we operate our cement plant as efficiently as possible, while learning lessons that we can apply to our other facilities,” said Kevin Groombridge, South Ferriby Cement Plant Environment Manager.
