30 September 2022France: Fives has secured a contract to supply a 65MW Pillard NOVAFLAM burner to a cement producer. The customer’s aims are to continue to maximise alternative fuel (AF) use, to improve clinker quality and to reduce NOx emissions at its cement plant. The order also includes precalciner burners and a natural gas-powered 35MW Pillard hot gas generator, as well as valve trains and pumping systems.
KÇS Kipaş Çimento orders Pyrorotor from KHD Humboldt Wedag
17 August 2022Turkey: KÇS Kipaş Çimento has placed an order with KHD Humboldt Wedag for a Pyrorotor for its Kahramanmaraş cement plant. The supplier says that the equipment will enable the plant's calciner to achieve an alternative fuel (AF) substitution rate of 90%. It will additionally restrict NOx emissions to 800mg/Nm3. After a short shutdown for assemblage of gas duct connections, KHD expects to commission the upgraded system in mid-to-late 2023.
The company says that the KÇS Kipaş Çimento contract represents its 11th Pyrorotor order globally and the first in Turkey.
FLSmidth to carry out Pacasmayo cement plant upgrade
15 December 2021Peru: FLSmidth has secured a contract for the supply of a new pyro line for Cementos Pacasmayo’s Pacasmayo cement plant near Lima. The new line will give the plant an additional production capacity of 0.6Mt/yr. The supplier says that it plans to install a Cross-Bar cooler, low-NOx calciner, Jetflex burner, equipment for dosing and feeding and process automation. FLSmidth says that the upgrade will reduce the plant’s energy consumption and open new opportunities for the use of alternative fuel (AF).
FLSmidth’s head of projects and upgrades and senior vice president Anders Josefsen said “We are very excited to work with Cementos Pacasmayo on this project – not only on growing the business, but doing it in a sustainable way. The new line will be equipped with a state-of-the-art pyro system including several of our MissionZero solutions. With this, Pacasmayo makes a significant investment in future-proofing its production.” He added “The Pacasmayo project is a prime example of our capabilities within process design: ensuring the integration to an existing plant, while also demonstrating our ability to deliver equipment that meets demands for energy and fuel efficiency.”
FLSmidth to supply HotDisc-S combustion device and feeding systems for Indocement’s Tunggal Prakarsa cement plant
25 November 2021Indonesia: FLSmidth has won a contract for the supply of a new alternative fuel (AF) line to Indocement’s Tunggal Prakarsa cement plant consisting of a HotDisc-S combustion device and feeding systems. The supplier says that the line will enable AF derived from municipal solid waste (MSW) to replace coal at the plant.
Cement business president Carsten Riisberg Lund said that MSW processing is ‘a growing challenge in many parts of the world.’ He continued, “The cement industry is well-positioned to be part of the solution, and we see more and more cement producers successfully replacing fossil fuels with AF. I am very pleased that we can support Indocement in its sustainability ambitions in Indonesia, particularly at a site we helped to build in 2000.”
Untha signs distribution agreement with Axia
07 October 2021Japan: Austria-based Untha has awarded an exclusive distribution agreement in Japan to Axia. The distributor has taken delivery of a mobile Untha XR shredder for use as a demonstration unit at its customer sites and ordered six more models.
Axia CEO Kazunori Kawata said “China’s ban on waste plastic imports means Japan has sharpened up on its domestic recycling capabilities. The introduction of Untha’s engineering experience will really disrupt the market. Operators are starting to think differently about machine reliability, throughputs and lifecycle costs. As a nation, we must increase our productivity and capacity, and we need a different class of machine to be able to do this – one that is highly configurable, versatile and built to last. Output precision is also crucial.” He added “If Japan is to enhance its commitment to the environment, it is important that we seek to use energy efficient technologies within our waste and recycling facilities. Renowned globally for using 75% less energy than competitors’ diesel-hydraulic machines, the Untha XR shredder doesn’t just improve the net carbon impact of the process – it keeps fuel costs low, too. Some customers have been known to save US$135,000/yr in fuel costs alone.”
UAE: LafargeHolcim subsidiary Geocycle UAE has extended its reduction cell pot lining supply contract with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) by 10 years. Emirates News Agency has reported that during the contract’s previous term EGA supplied Geocycle UAE with 160,000t of spent pot lining for use in production at LafargeHolcim cement plants. The partners already plan to transport a further 40,000t of pot lining from aluminium production in 2021 and 2022, both to Geocycle and directly as pre-processed material to LafargeHolcim’s Fajairah cement plant. EGA began spent pot lining processing at its new Al Taweelah pot lining crushing facility in 2020.
Geocycle UAE general manager Medhat Ismail said, "At Geocycle UAE and LafargeHolcim, our vision of enabling a circular economy starts with the preservation of natural resources by substituting fossil fuels and raw materials with waste or by-products. We aim to bring society a step closer to a zero-waste future. To achieve this goal, we need progressive partners such as EGA."
Tarmac’s Tunstead cement plant secures solid recovered fuel supply from Eco-Power Environmental
22 January 2021UK: CRH subsidiary Tarmac has awarded a contract for the supply of solid recovered fuel (SRF) pellets for its Tunstead cement plant to Eco-Power Environmental. The supplier says that the fuel will come from its 125,000t/yr Humberside SRF pellet plant in Melton, East Riding of Yorkshire. It has spent Euro17m in recent upgrades to the plant. Its pellets offer up to 50% biomass content, calorific value in excess of 20MJ/kg, less than 0.5% chlorine, low ash content and the ability to be co-dosed with fossil fuels using existing equipment.
Tarmac Tunstead plant manager Chris Bradbury said “Reducing CO2 at Tunstead is one of the team's top priorities and working closely with our colleagues in Sapphire we have made good progress with sustainable waste-derived fuels throughout 2020 and hope to go further in 2021.” He continued, “We got the opportunity of trialling the SRF pellets early in the year as a replacement for woodchips. The trial went well with only a few modifications required for the inside of the storage silo and feed out system. Once the moderations were completed, we extended the trial, which had great results. In June 2020 we then went on to continuous usage and from the start the pellets have proved to be a very stable fuel. These have been one of the main contributors to the continuous high waste-derived fuel substitution rate for fossil fuels from June to the end of the year.”
Sharjah Cement signs solid recovered fuel contract with Bee’ah
26 November 2020UAE: Bee’ah has secured a solid recovered fuel (SRF) supply contract with Sharjah Cement. Emirates News Agency has reported that the contract covers the supply of at least 73,000t/yr for the period over which it is in effect.
Pravinchandra Bataviasaid, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Bee’ah, said "Companies and industries in the UAE must work together to realise new efficiencies and achieve the country’s sustainability objectives. We thank Bee’ah for its support and provision of a more environmentally responsible fuel that will allow us to reduce our carbon emissions and improve our environmental performance. With this agreement and other on-going arrangements with Bee’ah and other public and private sector establishments, Sharjah Cement will replace more than 30% of fossil fuel with alternative fuels.”
When it commissions its latest waste-to-energy plant in the Emirate of Sharjah in 2021, in partnership with Masdar, Bee’ah will also enable the region to meet its zero waste-to-landfill target.
