Germany: Zement- und Kalkwerke Otterbein plans to invest Euro10m in upgrades to its Otterbein cement plant to increase the sustainability of cement production there. The new equipment will include a hot gas filter SCR catalytic converter system. The producer says that this will install the facility as one of the lowest-CO2 cement plants in the world. Local press has reported that, after commissioning the new system, the company plans to increase its approved substitution of biomass as fuel to 100% from 60%.
FCT Combustion delivers Turbu-Flex burner for HeidelbergCement’s Hanover cement plant
28 February 2022Germany: Australia-based FCT Combustion has successfully delivered a new Turbu-Flex burner to replace the existing burner at HeidelbergCement’s Hanover, Lower Saxony, cement plant. FCT Combustion will also supply burner accessories and add-ons, an igniter, a flame sensor, fans, blowers and spare parts. The project aims to improve combustion control and maximise alternative fuel (AF) use in the plant’s cement production.
BHS-Sonthofen upgrades Sonthofen testing centre
17 September 2021Germany: BHS-Sonthofen has upgraded its Sonthofen, Bavaria, testing centre. The supplier has installed new recycling systems for customers to test on different waste streams.
Director process development Steffen Hinderer “As a leading process consultant and mechanical process technology provider, it is our responsibility to develop all-in-one solutions with our customers that are perfectly adapted to their needs.” He added “Our test centre, which opened in Summer 2019, has already raised the bar in the areas of mixing, shredding, recycling, and filtering. Thanks to the expansion of the recycling and environment test division, our customers are able to test all their processes in this area even more comprehensibly in our facilities.”
BHS-Sonthofen launches RAPAX pre-shredder
22 July 2021Germany: BHS-Sonthofen has launched the RAPAX pre-shredder. The supplier says that the shredder is able to handle various waste fractions including commercial, industrial and construction waste and metal fractions. It is available with shaft lengths of 1.2 – 3.2m. Shafts are able to move synchronously, asynchronously or in reverse.
Mechanical designer Ingo Schneeman said, “The input materials used by our customers can vary greatly, especially in the area of metal recycling. Whether it’s small electrical equipment or white goods, for example, our various programs ensure optimal shredding.”
Germany: Märker Zement has ordered a single-source alternative fuels (AF) storage and conveying system for its Harburg, Bavaria cement plant from Germany-based Beumer. The supplier says that the line will consist of a 700m pipe conveyor, silos, distribution equipment and a screen. It will be equipped with a BG OptiFeed screw weigh feeder. It will connect the preheater both to an existing warehouse and a new one at the site. The line will handle two different qualities of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and shredded tyres. It will be operated at a maximum capacity of 40t/hr. Commissioning is scheduled for 2022.
Iraq: Germany-based Eggersmann Group has commissioned a 1040t/day refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant in Sulaymaniyah municipality. The unit uses the company’s biological drying process to increase the yield of RDF from the municipal solid waste (MSW) it receives. Waste & Recycling Middle East and Africa previously reported that the plant can achieve a landfill diversion rate of 80%. A local cement producer will operate the facility and receive MSW from the region for a fee.
Vecoplan joins RETech Partnership
15 March 2021Germany: Vecoplan has joined RETech Partnership, a waste management industry network. The network supports the export of waste management products, as well as knowledge transfer. Its members commonly undertake joint initiatives.
Waste and alternative fuels head of sales Tim Hamer said, “As a member we’ll always be up to date on matters like country data, current invitations to tender and funding and financing options. The network will enable us to establish important contacts, and it will provide support in organising events and conferences at the national and international levels.”
Germany: Vecoplan has launched the VRZ 2500 shredder and the VPC 1600 pre-shredder, which can be combined with the VHZ single-shaft shredder.
The new addition to the VRZ series is intended for recycling and reprocessing waste wood. The unit is equipped with sickle-shaped ripper teeth and is intended for minimal maintenance through the use of HiTorc direct drives. The drives have a capacity of 2 x 138kw and are resistant to tramp materials. They are also dynamic, offering improved start-up and reversing behaviour. “During the development of the new VRZ series shredder, we placed great emphasis on making it robust, resistant to intrusive materials, reliable and low-maintenance,” said Martin Baldus, Head of Industrial Shredding development at Vecoplan.
The VPC 1600 is a pre-shredder intended for use with voluminous objects and bulky wooden items such as pallets. Notably, the new version of this product can be combined with the VHZ single-shaft shredders (VHZ 1600 and VPC 1600) to increase throughput by up to 50% and to save space. With its working width of 1600mm, the 800mm-high VPC is designed to fit exactly onto the VHZ with a sliding frame connecting the shredder and the pre-shredder. The VPC is permanently fixed during operation but it is designed to be moved at other times if an operator has to change the counter-knives in the shredder. The filler port of the new pre-shredder measures 1605 x 1605mm and the drive power is 2 x 9.2kw. Sixteen counter-crushers have been integrated into the machine and it also has two independently running rotors, each with a speed of ten revolutions per minute.
N+P announced upcoming SubCoal plant
31 July 2020Netherlands: N+P has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for a 170t/yr SubCoal refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant in Farmsum, Groningen Province to Germany-based Sutco RecyclingTechnik. The plant, scheduled for commissioning in early 2021, will occupy the site of an existing N+P SubCoal production facility, acquired by the company in 2012.
It said that the new plant will be equipped “to allow further control of key fuel parameters such as chlorine, sulphur and, nitrogen.” It added, “N+P has developed and fine-tuned the SubCoal production method, resulting in plans for a new layout to implement the lessons learned over the past 10 years.” Managing Director David Driessen said, “The decision of the board to go ahead with a full new-build is a clear sign of our ambition to grow and expand across the globe.”

11 May 2020Germany: Vecoplan has said that it will host 360-Degree Days, an exclusive live presentation from its technology centre, from 27 - 29 May 2020. It says that the event is aimed at filling the void left by the cancellation of IFAT 2020, which would have covered waste and raw materials management, due to the coronavirus outbreak. Vecoplan said, “Participants will learn all about recycling and processing technology, subdivided into several topic areas. Details on the content will be announced closer to the time.”
