Vassiliko Cement to build new fuel store at Vassiliko cement plant

Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement has secured environmental clearance to build a new alternative fuel (AF) store at its Vassiliko cement plant in Nicosia. Philenews has reported that the facility will replace the site’s former AF store, which burned down in a fire started by a mobile shredder in June 2022.

Tyre fire breaks out at Vassiliko Cement plant

Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement’s Vassiliko cement plant was the site of a tyre fire in an alternative fuel (AF) storage area on 11 June 2022. The Cyprus Mail newspaper has reported that the fire begun due to a mobile shredder malfunction. Enerco Energy Recovery operates the shredder at the 2.5Mt/yr cement plant. Local residents protested the incident at the site of the plant’s former quarry on 13 June 2022.

Vassiliko Cement recognised for use of alternative fuels

Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement has been awarded an honorary distinction by the Institute of Environment & Sustainable Development for its use of alternative fuels. Its cement plant has a substitution rate of over 40%. The cement producer was also praised for other environmental improvements to its production line including the use of fabric filters for dust removal, the equipment and mode of operation for reduced emissions of air pollutants, the equipment for reduced electricity consumption that includes vertical grinding mills and the equipment for cutting down on thermal energy consumption with the use of waste heat recovery.

N+P extends solid recovered fuel supply agreement with Vassiliko Cement

Cyprus: N+P International has extended its solid recovered fuel (SRF) supply agreement with Vassiliko Cement to the end of 2020. The deal also includes an option to further extend the agreement to the end of 2022. N+P has been supplying Vassiliko Cement with SRF from the UK and Italy by sea since 2015.

“This contract is the foundation of a long-term cooperation between Vassiliko Cement, Enerco Energy Recovery and N+P. The parties intend to maximise alternative fuel consumption in the Vassiliko Cement plant, to do so parties recently carried out a trial to co-grind N+P’s Subcoal pellets in the plants coal mills. The first results of this trial are looking very promising and further trials will be done the near future. We agreed not to disclose precise contract volumes, but at present >2500t/week of SRF is shipped into Vassiliko Cement,” said a representative of N+P.

Vassiliko Cement plans to reach a 55% substitution rate of alternative fuels by 2020.
