Cementos Cosmos approved to raise waste fuels substitution rate
18 January 2018Spain: Local environment authorities have approved Cementos Cosmos to increases its alternative fuels substitution rate to up to 45% from its current limit of 30%. The plant has been supplementing its petcoke use with refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and biomass, according to the Córdoba newspaper. The plant, and its owners Brazil’s Votorantim Cement, have faced local opposition to changing its fuels mix.
Development bank approves US$7.4m loan for Votorantim Cimentos to co-process alternative fuels
09 October 2017Brazil: BNDES, the national development bank, has approved a US$7.4m loan for Votorantim Cimentos to co-process alternative fuels. The funds will be used to adapt the company's industrial units to process industrial waste, tyres and biomass, according to the O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper. The cement producer is preparing to spend US$13.6m towards modifying its plants at Salto de Pirapora in Sao Paulo and Edealina in Goias.
US: St Marys Cement’s Charlevoix plant has remained open following a fire that destroyed its alternative fuels storage facility on 7 June 2017. No one was injured in the incident and work on the plant’s expansion project is continuing, according to the Charlevoix Courier newspaper. The warehouse containing refuse-derived fuels (RDF) caught fire on the evening on the day and was swiftly extinguished by fire services. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been alerted about the incident.
Spain: Cementos Cosmos has stopped exports from its Niebla cement plant due to an increase in the price of petcoke. The subsidiary of Brazil’s Votorantim has also implemented a Temporary Regulation of Employment from June 2017 to May 2018 that will enable it to suspend workers or reduce working hours, according to the Huelva Información newspaper. The cement producer says it is waiting for planning permission to install a dosing system for waste fuels that will cut it fuel bill. However, the local community has opposed attempts to use alternative waste fuels previously.
